Calling Songs, Duets, and Auditory Tuning in Two Cryptic Katydids (Tettigoniidae: Phaneropterinae: Amblycorypha)
In most katydids, females listen to and locate a stationary, singing male for mating. Pair formation differs in phaneropterine katydids where pairs form duets and the male typically Þnds the female after hearing her acoustic reply to his song. We recorded the duetting behavior of two cryptic species of phaneropterines, Amblycorypha rotundifolia (Scudder) and Amblycorypha alexanderi Walker (Tett...
متن کاملRevisiting adaptations of neotropical katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) to gleaning bat predation
All animals have defenses against predators, but assessing the effectiveness of such traits is challenging. Neotropical katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) are an abundant, ubiquitous, and diverse group of large insects eaten by a variety of predators, including substrate-gleaning bats. Gleaning bats capture food from surfaces and usually use prey-generated sounds to detect and locate prey. A ...
متن کاملOn the family-group ranks of katydids (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae).
The purpose of this note is to propose minor modifications to recent changes in the classification of katydids, to preserve the stability of the family Tettigoniidae as including all katydids. This concept has been used in the majority of references since it was established long ago (Krauss 1902), with comparatively few exceptions, where all katydid subfamilies were treated as families in super...
متن کاملShrinking Wings for Ultrasonic Pitch Production: Hyperintense Ultra-Short-Wavelength Calls in a New Genus of Neotropical Katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae)
This article reports the discovery of a new genus and three species of predaceous katydid (Insecta: Orthoptera) from Colombia and Ecuador in which males produce the highest frequency ultrasonic calling songs so far recorded from an arthropod. Male katydids sing by rubbing their wings together to attract distant females. Their song frequencies usually range from audio (5 kHz) to low ultrasonic (...
متن کاملTaxonomic notes on two species of bush katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Phaneropterinae) from Bukit Fraser, Malay Peninsula.
Material based on a taxonomic collection in Bukit Fraser, Pahang of Malay Peninsula enables the review of two genera of bush katydid (Phaneropterinae). The female of Elimaea (Rhaebelimaea) pseudochloris Ingrisch, 1998 is described and recorded for the first time outside its type locality, Thailand. One new species of Pseudopsyra from Bukit Fraser is described: Pseudopsyra bispina sp. n.
